front yard ~ grading

The front yard was originally flat with a slight slope to the inside of the dike. Most of the water drained to the east yard, but some remained in a low spot beside dike and driveway. This was changed. (The line in the grass, starting under the rear wheel of the mini-van, was a guide to indicate where the low point would be. The hollow on the left side of the path was from a test dig.) The area was dug out to a depth of about 0.5 m. And, to drain water, a culvert was installed through the path up the dike.

Lowering the elevation of this area allows for tall material and gives snow melt a place to collect until it is able to drain into the east yard.

Much of this area was originally a driveway, so the top layer was mostly gravel. It took some doing with the cultivator to tear it up, however once below the layer of gravel it was not so difficult to dig with the loader after it was cultivated layer by layer.

Down spouts feed rain water into winding furrows in front of the dwelling unit. Rain water, from roof and driveway, is directed to the thumb, by way of a mini-culvert through the path in front of the building. Water then flows across the larger area to a culvert through the path up the dike. This second culvert drains the sub-region into the east yard.
