characteristics

A long unbranched stem with alternate leaves. Small, white flowers are in a spike-like raceme on the central stem. The flowers are mildly fragrant. Fruit is a small purple or black striped berry turning bright red when ripe. Rhizomatous: colony forming. A member of the lily family.

Meadows, riverbanks, wooded slopes, sandy fields.

uses

Flowers attract a variety of bees and flies. Mice and songbirds eat the berries. Deer feed on the foliage.
