Elymus trachycaulus
characteristics
Loosely tufted, slender grass with erect, hollow stems. Leaves are rough, flat, mostly basal, and covered with soft hairs. Seedheads consist of overlapping awnless spikelets. A species of wild rye. Short-lived perennial.
Formerly called Agropyron trachycaulum.

This grass is similar in appearance to quackgrass, Agropyron repens now Elymus repens. Main differences are slender wheatgrass has a slight kink near the top of the seedhead and it is a bunch grass while quackgrass is sod-forming.

Grasslands, disturbed areas, riverbanks, open forests.
uses
Food source for rabbits, white-tailed deer, horses and livestock. Seeds are eaten by songbirds and sharp-tailed grouse.
